Block the Instagram App on iPhone — And Actually Stick With It
I'm Glosso, a little creature that eats your screen time. I lock Instagram (and TikTok, X, YouTube, Reddit — whichever you pick) until you feed me a few words. Pick your session length — 1 minute is enough. iOS-level enforcement. Free on iOS.

Why blocking Instagram is hard
If you've tried to block Instagram before, you've probably done the classic moves: delete the app on Sunday, reinstall by Wednesday. Set a Screen Time limit, tap "Ignore Limit" three times in an hour. Put the phone in a drawer, find yourself back in the feed anyway.
Instagram is harder to block than other apps for two reasons. First, it's one of the most addictive products ever designed — the Reels feed, the stories, the notification cadence are all optimized to pull you back. Second, a lot of your life genuinely lives there — DMs, events, business, memory. Any hard block creates a real cost, and that cost is the excuse your brain uses to unblock.
The answer isn't stronger willpower. It's a better lock — one that's both harder to bypass and paired with a productive alternative.
How Glosso blocks Instagram (and more)
Glosso isn't just another blocker. It's a little character who lives in your iPhone and only eats your screen time if you feed it with language. Until you complete a vocab session — as short as 1 minute, your call — Instagram and any other app you pick won't open. Because it's built on Apple's Screen Time and Family Controls APIs, the block is enforced at the system level.
You can choose to block Instagram only, or combine it with TikTok, X, YouTube, Reddit, BeReal and any other app that's hijacking your attention. You can also keep DMs accessible by whitelisting the Instagram DM shortcut if you rely on it for conversations.
Hard block at iOS level
Instagram is blocked via the Screen Time API. No tap-through, no easy override. The only key is your daily session.
Bundle Instagram with other apps
Block Instagram alongside TikTok, X, YouTube, Reddit or any other app. All of them stay locked until the session is done.
Learn while you block
The unlock is a short language drill — pick 1, 3, 5 or 10 minutes. 9 languages, SRS-powered. Instead of guilt, you get progress.
A tamagotchi that keeps you honest
Glosso isn't a timer — it's a creature with 4 evolution stages and 13 cosmetics to collect. Feed it well, it grows. Skip a day, it waits. That emotional hook is why people actually stick with it.
Block Instagram on iPhone in 3 steps
Install Glosso from the App Store
Download is free. Grant Screen Time permission when prompted — this is what enables the blocking.
Pick Instagram (and anything else)
In Glosso, tap "Add app to block" and select Instagram. Add TikTok, X, YouTube too if they're also eating your day.
Tap Instagram — unlock with a lesson
From now on, opening Instagram launches a quick vocabulary drill. Finish it and Instagram is unlocked for the day. Don't finish it and it stays closed.
“Honestly, it's genius. It cuts me off cold in my scroll to make me work on my Spanish. Best app to stop wasting time!”
“Finally a useful app. I'd been looking for ages for a blocker that's both useful and fun. It's great!”
“The vocabulary toll… a bit annoying at first but honestly it works, a minute here, a minute there, and I'm learning my Spanish vocab, it's nice.”
Glosso vs. deleting Instagram, Screen Time limits, and other blockers
**Deleting Instagram** works for a few days, then you reinstall. **iOS Screen Time limits** let you tap "Ignore Limit" without friction. **Opal, One Sec and ScreenZen** add a breath or a delay that becomes invisible within a week. None of them force a real decision every time you want to open the app.
Glosso forces a meaningful investment before Instagram opens — 1 to 10 minutes of vocab, your pick. Most users just don't bother opening Instagram for the mindless micro-sessions — and when they do open it (after their real session), they're fine with it, because they earned it.
If you want to keep Instagram on your phone and still cut 80% of your use, Glosso is the right tool. If you want to nuke it completely, delete the app. If you want something in between that also teaches you Spanish, that's exactly Glosso.

FAQ
Does Glosso really block the Instagram app on iPhone?
Yes, at the iOS system level. Glosso uses Apple's Screen Time and Family Controls APIs to enforce the block — the same mechanism behind iOS parental controls. Until you finish your daily language session, tapping the Instagram icon shows the Glosso lock screen, not the Instagram feed. There is no skip button.
Can I block Instagram on iPhone without deleting the app?
Yes — that's exactly what Glosso does. Instagram stays installed on your phone, notifications still come in, your account remains logged in. But opening the app is gated behind your daily vocabulary session. Once you complete the session, Instagram unlocks for the rest of the day, then re-locks the next morning.
Can I block Instagram DMs but keep the rest accessible?
Instagram doesn't have a separate DM app on iOS — DMs live inside the main app. You can either block all of Instagram (DMs included), or keep the whole app unlocked. Most users find that after 2-3 weeks of blocking, they rely on DMs less because they're not constantly pulled into the feed anyway.
Does Glosso also block TikTok and other apps?
Yes. You can add any app on your iPhone to the blocked list — TikTok, X, YouTube, Reddit, Snapchat, Facebook, BeReal, Pinterest, games, news. The blocking is per-app, so you can mix and match (for example block Instagram and TikTok, but keep YouTube available).
How much does Glosso cost?
Glosso is free on iOS, with full access to the Instagram blocker and every feature. A paid plan may come later, but there's nothing to pay right now — no ads, and no data sharing with Meta.
Will Instagram notifications still come through?
Yes, push notifications continue to arrive — you'll know someone liked your post or sent a DM. But tapping the notification still opens Glosso's lock screen, not the Instagram app, until you've finished your daily session. Some users choose to turn off Instagram notifications entirely for extra peace, which Glosso fully supports.
Stop deleting Instagram. Gate it behind something useful.
Install Glosso free on the App Store, block Instagram (and anything else that eats your time), and turn the friction into real language progress.
